Ms. Gorman, as always, gives us authentic word choice and change ups in rhythm and rhyme to deliver her thoughtful, heartfelt message. Gentle, inviting illustrations by Loren Long bolster the philosophical messages. The music motif adds another layer of meaning to the message of change (music travels and changes/"playing changes") and the delight in not only embracing change but creativity and action as part of change. Also, as in a musical situation, each person is unique and important, but the music is made as a group. This is a treasure of a book, to be savored and read aloud! For all ages, truly. The words are amazing, but the pictures are what make the message come alive for my daughter. She's just 22 months old, so definitely younger than the target audience for this book, but she loves it. I take my time reading through it, talking about what's happening in the pictures ("They're picking up the trash so people can play on the playground. Do you see the slide? Isn't it nice that kids will be able to play there now?" etc) and she is absolutely captivated. We never just read it once, because she always wants to read it again. I felt compelled to write a review because, 1. My daughter isn't in the intended age range but is really responding to the book, and 2. While we read, I'm seeing lightbulbs go off for her about topics like sharing and helping others, and she's not even two yet. My son is 2 years old, so it will likely be a little advanced for him (says age range is 4 to 8 years), but I can't wait to read it to him. I know he will absolutely love the artwork.
